Waiter Mode: communicate your order or dietary needs clearly

Sometimes the hardest part of eating abroad is not understanding the menu — it is explaining what you want once you have decided. Waiter Mode generates a clear, readable card you can show directly to restaurant staff.

The problem it solves

You have translated the menu. You know what you want. Now you need to tell the server: no dairy, sauce on the side, or the tasting menu but without the shellfish course. In a language barrier situation, these kinds of nuanced requests are where pointing and hoping tends to break down.

Generic translation apps require you to type out your request accurately and then hope the translation carries the right meaning. Allergy cards say the same thing every time, regardless of the situation. Waiter Mode is different: you describe what you need in your own words, and Nomi generates a clear request purpose-built for that specific situation.

Common uses

Dietary restrictions

I have a tree nut allergy and cannot eat peanuts or cashews.

Special preparation

Can I have the fish grilled instead of fried?

Ingredient removal

Please make this dish without the spicy sauce.

Sharing and portions

We would like to share these two dishes between three people.

How it works

1

Open Waiter Mode from the Nomi menu or from any dish view.

2

Describe your request in your own words — your language, your phrasing.

3

Nomi generates a clear, readable card in the local language (or whichever language you select).

4

Turn your phone toward the server and let them read the card directly.

What Waiter Mode is and is not

It is

A purpose-built communication tool for restaurant situations. Good for dietary restrictions, special preparation requests, ingredient removals, and sharing arrangements. One clear request per use — designed to be easy for staff to read and act on.

It is not

A real-time two-way conversation tool, a guaranteed translation in every dialect, or a substitute for direct confirmation when something is allergy-critical. In some very small or informal restaurant settings, additional communication may still be necessary.

Frequently asked questions

What languages does Waiter Mode support?

Waiter Mode can generate requests in a wide range of languages. You write your request in your own language, and Nomi produces a version designed to be understood by staff in the local language. Support varies by language and region.

Can I save Waiter Mode cards for reuse on the same trip?

This depends on the version of Nomi you're using. Within a session, your recent requests are accessible. Longer-term saving of reusable cards is part of the Plus feature set.

Is Waiter Mode useful even if I don't have allergies?

Yes. Waiter Mode works for any situation where you need to communicate clearly with restaurant staff — asking for a sauce on the side, requesting a specific preparation, or clarifying a shared order between multiple people.

What if the server doesn't understand the card?

Waiter Mode produces clear, simple text designed to be readable by staff. In some cases — particularly in small or rural restaurants — additional gestures or help from the host may still be necessary. Nomi helps reduce friction, but it's not a guaranteed communication solution in every context.

How is Waiter Mode different from Google Translate?

Google Translate handles direct text-to-text translation. Waiter Mode is purpose-built for restaurant situations: it takes your natural description of a need or request and generates a clear, specific message optimized to be understood by restaurant staff — not just a raw translation of what you typed.

Does Waiter Mode work offline?

Waiter Mode requires an internet connection to generate requests. We recommend having a local SIM or portable wifi when traveling.
